VALUE CHAIN IN COSTUME DESIGN

VALUE CHAIN

A film design entails consumption at various levels - fabrics, raw materials, sourcing from brands and some amount of wastage. We as socially responsible Costume Designers endeavor to plan every step in this and create only as much as needed- where the inception thought is of sustainability; which is extremely challenging in films.

Therefore we have created a sustainability goal sheet for our films and we try and tick  as many boxes as possible-

  • Fabric procurement from Handloom artisans and adapting khadi and natural/ sustainable fabric as far as possible. As well purchasing accessories from grassroots craftsmen. And fabricating at small scale tailoring units.
  • Sourcing ready to wear from home grown brands who are trying to employ sustainability standards
  • Buying from previously loved stock- old film stock, export rejects, fabric surplus, revolve brands, second hand Godowns
  • Sponsorship from brands so products can be returned after use and Rentals for the same reason
  • Using vegan leather products or fabricating with vegan leather- India Has huge options in both
  • Convincing producers to sell their old stock to us or to carry it forward from our films. And finally to donate whatever is unusable
  • Films like Jayesh Bhai Jordaar and
  • Maja Ma gave us an unparalleled opportunity to employ all these options successfully. Featured here are many of the artisans in Bhuj and Hodka  we have nurtured over the past few years in this journey and many sustainable brands too - a huge salute to them.
